Explore the Austrian Alps by Foot
Walk with Edwin de Bruijn in the Zillertal Alps
September 12 to 20, 2027
This trip is run in conjunction with the Boise OSHER chapter and is limited to their members through November 1, 2026. If there are still open places then, it will be opened to everyone..
Join us for a walking holiday in the Zillertal Alps, Austria
This will be our third time walking in Austria since 2022, We will be in a striking valley through the Zillertal region of Austria. It is east of Innsbruck and near the Italian border.
Edwin de Bruijn will again be our leader for this trip in a region of Austria that he knows well.
Each region of Austria is unique. The mountains and valleys are different, the architecture, the food, the German dialect.
Following breakfast each morning, we’ll have the choice of taking a cable car or a bus upward to the start of our day’s walk. The difficulty of the walking will be moderate. We will generally traverse the sides of mountains, rather then climb directly up or down.
When it is time to eat lunch we’ll picnic or eat at a mountain hut. After our walk, we’ll return to our hotel for a rest, or perhaps a swim and a sauna, before settling down to a gourmet dinner.

Is this walking or hiking?
When one mentions the Austrian alps, visions of rock climbing and mountain ascents come to mind. That is not what this trip is all about.
This is a walking trip. The alps will be all around you, but you’ll stay on the easier paths around lakes and on the bottom of valleys. And while we can’t promise there will never be a rock in your path, the routes we take will generally be comprised of smooth gravel that is easy under foot.
This doesn’t mean that some level of fitness is not required for this trip. If you are not regularly walking (or willing to start doing so in advance), you are not likely to enjoy this trip. But you don’t need to be a mountain climber, or indeed a hiker.
Relying on cable cars and public buses, we will be up in the mountains without having to get there on foot.

About this Austrian walking tour
This tour consists of a series of day walks in the Austrian alps.
The Ziller Valley starts out wide and flat, inviting you into the mountains.
Mayrhofen, the main town in the valley, is a popular destination, and will serve as the base for our walks. We will enjoy the green valley with its alms, mountain pastures, alpine lakes, and wildflowers, together with the sound of cowbells. Cable Cars can bring us to elevation to start our walks higher up the mountains.
Some of those walks bring you to spots with stunning views north over the lower peaks stretching into Germany, and south to the higher, snow-covered mountains on the border of Italy.
You will be able to fly into Munich to be transported south to begin this walking tour in Mayrhofen. There we’ll all check into our hotel that will serve as our headquarters for the next eight nights.

Your Trip Leader: Edwin de Bruijn
Edwin is a native of the Netherlands but has lived many years in Brattleboro, Vermont. He grew up spending summers hiking and climbing in the alps. He has hiked often in Austria’s alps and has personally selected each route we’ll take and he will lead each walk. Here is how he introduces himself:
My first experience with a hut-to-hut hike was when my father took me to Austria back in my early teens. I gave my daughters the same experience years later, and I still love to share Austria with others whenever I can.
The trails we’ll follow on this trip lead through green mountain pastures with cows, wildflowers, mountain animals, and alms (alpine farms) where often you can stop to enjoy a snack or get a taste of local milk or cheese.
Walkers of all ages follow the trails alongside mountain lakes, over passes, and to mountain tops with views to the higher Alps on clear days. The area provides a wonderful introduction to being in the Alps and is accessible to nearly everyone.
The interconnecting network of trails, cable cars, chair lifts, trains and bus lines connects the villages and towns in the valleys with the surrounding mountains, and gives multiple ways and routes to explore the area and the many possibilities it offers.

“I enjoyed the trip more than I imagined. All the meals and snacks, hotels, rides, and walks, and the schedule in general was perfect. I knew it would be a wonderful Travel Fever Tours trip, as always, but this trip was beyond excellent. Thank you Edwin for leading us.”
“The walking was just right for my level of ability, and Bob and Edwin took care to ensure that every guest was happy and safe along the way. The accommodations were good and the food excellent. I highly recommend this trip.”
Is this Trip for Me?
We’ll be in the mountains on this trip, but we will rely on cable cars and an efficient network of buses to get us up the mountains. This then allows us traverse slopes rather than climb up them. We will walk around lakes, rather than climb to find them.
We certainly won’t do any technical rock climbing, nor cross glaciers, both which would require specialized skills and equipment. And we will avoid steep slopes and those with roots or rocks.
You should still be moderately fit and accustomed to walking distances of 5-7 miles, but you don’t need to be an expert mountain climber for this trip.
We will leave our bags at the hotel each day, so you’ll only need to carry a small pack while walking that should have additional outerwear, water, and a snack.
Contact Us if you have any questions about the difficulty of this trip and we’re happy to put you in touch with our tour leader who can provide more detailed information.
