March 16 to 24, 2027 with optional three-day stay in Trondheim, Norway
Discover a new place to ski in the mountains of Sweden
March 16 to 24, 2027 with optional three-day stay in Trondheim, Norway
Come discover a new place to ski in the northern mountains of Sweden. We’ll travel there in March, after the skiing is over in most other places and when the days turn long and the skies are generally blue.
Join us on this unique opportunity to ski among the rolling hills at a world-class Swedish ski center as we set out on cross-country skis or studier skis for touring. We will stay at a well known ski center, enjoy well groomed trails, and follow experienced guides.
When we’re not skiing, we’ll eat from Swedish smorgasbords, rub shoulders with skiers from all over Sweden, take a sauna, enjoy a hot tub, try our skill on a dog sled, stand close to an evening bonfire, and more.
This trip is designed as an authentic cross-country ski holiday. You’ll be outdoors to ski in a lovely place and you’ll come indoors to relax and socialize. You’ll experience winter turning to spring in a new place and a new culture.
Optional stay in Norway:
And if you like, you can also sample a bit of Norway with an optional three-night stay in Trondheim, Norway, before the skiing begins. This historic Viking location sits on a fjord not far from the Atlantic Ocean. Here you can rest up after your air travels and learn more about Norway, past and present.
Dates: March 16 to 24, 2027 with optional three-day stay in Trondheim, Norway, prior to the tour

Where we will ski
The Valadalen Ski Center is authentic. It is far from the glitz and nightlife of your typical ski area. People come here to ski and enjoy some tranquil time far from the crowds. You are more likely to see moose or reindeer here than flashy cars and designer ski suits. Most of all, people come here to ski.
This is a place where the Swedish national cross-country team has trained for the past 10+ years. While the Swedes may not be as decorated as the Norwegians in winter sports, the Swedish women’s national ski team did win 5 gold medals in Italy in 2026.
This is a place where the staff goes out of their way to provide you with great ski equipment, nicely groomed trails, and all the amenities you may need.
And beyond the skiing, we’ll enjoy the saunas and hot tubs, meet some energetic sled dogs, enjoy evening campfires, see the stars, and if we’re very lucky, even the northern lights.
The comfortable rooms all have private bathrooms with showers and you’ll find the buffet meals memorable. And there’s plenty of common areas in the center’s main building to relax and socialize.
The Valadalen Ski Center has its own network of trails which it carefully grooms. And each small village in the area has its own set of trails, many of which are interconnected.
Where we’ll stay
We’ll stay in the Vålådalen Ski Center in northern Sweden where the first thing you’ll notice is that nearly all the guests are Swedish. This will give us an immediate entry point into Swedish culture.
The ski center is relaxed. The guests come to ski, but the social aspects of being on holiday are also important. You can Visit the Center’s Website for more information.
We will have comfortable rooms, each with a private bathroom and shower. Rooms are either single or double.
The ski center is self-sufficient, providing us with meals, a bar, ski rentals, saunas, hot tubs and more. There is also a nature center and museum nearby.
We will fly into Trondheim, Norway, and we’ll transport you by van to the ski center in Sweden. The center itself is in a fairly remote location, but we’ll drive you to civilization at least once during the week so you can stock up on supplies.
Our trip activities:
Dog sledding
Curling lesson
Evening campfires
Northern lights (with luck)
Sauna (separate women’s and men’s)
Five outdoor hot tubs
Swedish Smorgasbord buffets at every meal
Optional ski lessons
Optional private guides

Our meals
We’ll be eating in proper Swedish “Smorgasbord” fashion with a buffet at Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. We can eat when we want and as much as we like. Expect to eat many traditional Swedish dishes. If you eat meat, plan to try the local reindeer and moose prepared in a number of ways. There is fish and other dishes for vegetarians and vegans can be accommodated as well.
The ski center uses local ingredients as much as possible and the bar manager even makes his own gin, flavored with local ingredients from the forest.
“This trip exceeded my expectations... The two local guides were knowledgeable about a wide range of issues and knew the city really well. Thanks so much for putting together this trip”
“We had so many unique experiences in Oaxaca and wonderful food. Highlights for me were visits to local markets, with all the interesting local foods and other items, and the people watching.”

Optional Trip Add-on: Three nights in Trondheim, Norway
We will fly into Trondheim, so why not spend a few days there to explore this appealing city on the sea. Trondheim is not that large, boasting 200,000 inhabitants, including 30,000 students, yet it is the third largest municipality in Norway and once served as the nation’s capital.
Trondheim was a historic Viking capital. It lies on a major fjord that empties into the north Atlantic. It offers a blend of medieval history, vibrant student culture, and stunning nature. Highlights of a visit there may include the gothic Nidaros Cathedral, a walk through the colorful Bakklandet neighborhood, a visit to the Kristiansten Fortress. All are accessible from the walkable city center where our hotel is located.
With this three-night option, we’ll guide you on an exploration of the city’s major attractions and we’ll eat together and share the same hotel. We will begin with a guided walking tour with a local guide and then visit together some of the attractions below. You will also have quite sufficient time to catch up on your sleep or explore on your own at your pace.
Top Attractions include:
Nidaros Cathedral: Norway's national shrine and the world's northernmost Gothic cathedral.
Bakklandet: A charming, restored working-class neighborhood filled with colorful wooden houses, cafes, and boutiques.
Gamle Bybro (Old Town Bridge): Known as the "Gate of Happiness," this bridge offers iconic views of the Nidelva River and old wharf houses.
Kristiansten Fortress: Built in 1685, this fortress offers panoramic views of the city and is a perfect spot for sunset.
Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum: An open-air museum featuring over 80 historic buildings and exhibitions on local history.
Museums: A variety of museums ranging from music to science to art.
Ravnkloa Fish Market: An historic market near the harbor to buy fresh seafood.
This tour add-on is optional. If you wish to arrive on the first day of the official tour, we can meet you at the Trondheim airport on our way by minibus to the Swedish border.
About the skiing
There are three main types of skiing in this part of Sweden. The focus of this trip is on cross country and ski touring, but you may fit in a day or two of downhill skiing if you like.
Cross country
The trails are tracked with a piston bully machine and include a section that is lit after dark in case you wish to work off your dinner after dark. Rentals of good quality are available onsite, or you can bring your own boots if you like.
Ski touring
These trails tend to go further and higher and benefit from more sturdy boots and skis. These trails are normally tracked with snow mobiles. Unless you have a strong preference on what type of skiing you prefer, we recommend you do both cross country and ski touring so you can get the best of both.
Downhill (Alpine)
There is a small T-bar lift at the ski center, but it is suitable mostly for children (although we can all use the lift to quickly gain elevation on cross-country or ski touring skis). For those who would like to do some proper downhill skiing, there is a medium-sized area about 15 minutes from our ski center. For more of a challenge, the largest ski resort in Scandinavia (Are) is about 45 minutes away.
We can arrange transportation to either of these slopes on one or two days and rentals are available at each resort. You would be responsible for the cost of the lift ticket and the alpine ski rentals.
Ski rentals are available for cross country and ski touring at the ski center. The rental cost for these skis is included in the price of the tour and you can switch the type of skis and boots and a daily basis, if you like. Cross-country trail fees are included in the cost of the trip. Downhill skis rentals are not included in the cost of the tour.
Local ski guides provided by the ski center will lead us on a number of the day’s adventures, especially when we head higher for ski touring. We will also have our own experienced ski instructor along on the trip.
