A walk through the beauty of Slovenia
Enjoy nature beside Lake Bohinj - May 2026
Join us for a walk through the unspoiled countryside in Slovenia.
May 9 to 17, 2026
Slovenia is a beautiful country, with gentle people, unspoiled natural beauty, a diversity of landscapes, and wonderful food. And while Slovenia boasts tall, alpine peaks for hiking, it is also a lovely area for 6-10 mile walks around lakes, through farm fields, and up gentle river valleys that lead to breath-taking waterfalls.
Slovenia borders Austria on the north and Italy to the west and combines the cultures and cuisines of its neighbors. And of course, Slovenia contributes its own language, history, and foods. It’s a most inviting country.
During this tour, we will stay in a central hotel for our entire trip, an easy walk from Lake Bohinj. From this HQ, we’ll undertake a series of picturesque day walks in the area as we take in a diverse and memorable corner of the country, just on the south side of Slovenia’s Triglav National Park.
See below for detailed descriptions of our walks.
An introduction to Slovenia
Slovenia is a small, yet remarkably diverse country nestled in the heart of Central Europe. It is a land of stunning geographical contrasts, where the Alps meet the Mediterranean. This unique location has shaped its landscape and culture, offering visitors a wide array of natural beauty, from the snow-capped peaks of the Julian Alps and the enchanting emerald-green rivers and lakes, to its small but beautiful Adriatic coastline. More than half of the country is covered by forests, making it one of the greenest nations in the world and a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, skiing, and other active pursuits.
The nation's rich cultural heritage is deeply intertwined with its historic position as a meeting point of diverse influences. For centuries, Slovenian lands were shaped by Celtic, Roman, and later, Germanic and Slavic traditions, eventually becoming part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and then Yugoslavia.
A strong sense of national identity, however, has always persisted, particularly through the preservation of the Slovene language and a deep appreciation for its arts and traditions. This cultural resilience culminated in Slovenia's peaceful declaration of independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, leading to a successful transition to a stable democracy.
Today, Slovenia is a thriving, modern European nation. It joined the European Union in 2004 and later adopted the euro. The country is increasingly recognized for its commitment to sustainability, its stunning natural landscapes, and its high quality of life. The capital, Ljubljana, has been honored as a "Green Capital of Europe." Beyond its natural allure and eco-conscious initiatives, Slovenia is also gaining recognition for its burgeoning wine industry and its local cuisine.

Starting from our hotel, we will first stop at the St. John the Baptist church which dates back to the 12th century. From there, we follow the scenic path along the northern shore of Lake Bohinj, where tranquil forest trails alternate with open lakeside, offering stunning reflections of the Julian Alps on clear days.
The route is especially magical in late spring, when wildflowers bloom across the meadows and woodlands.
Continue westward to Ukanc, a peaceful hamlet at the far end of the lake, and then the Savica Waterfall (Slap Savica). This 250-foot cascade emerges from a cave and tumbles into a turquoise pool. On the way back, we’ll stop for lunch at the Koča pri Savici mountain hut, a cozy spot nestled among alpine trees.
To complete the loop, we will stroll back down to the boat pier in Ukanc, where you’ll board a traditional wooden boat or electric ferry for a relaxing return journey across Lake Bohinj.
Duration: 5 hrs
Distance: 13.6 km (8.5 miles) -
We will begin our walk in Ribčev Laz, the village where we’ll be staying, and proceed to the 260-foot Voje Waterfall. Set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Bohinj, the scenic trail will take us through the dramatic beauty of Mostnica Gorge.
We will cross the iconic Devil's Bridge, an engineering marvel adorned with intricate stone carvings. Legend has it that the bridge was constructed by the Devil himself, adding a touch of intrigue to your adventure.
The Voje Waterfall empties into a serene glacial pool. There we’ll take a well-deserved break, and savor lunch at a nearby hut where we’ll enjoy local specialties.
On the walk back, we’ll stop to visit a charming Cheese Museum in a small village we’ll pass through. You’ll learn about Slovenia's rich dairy heritage and sample creamy artisanal cheeses.
Duration 6 hrs
Distance 17.6 km (10.9 miles) -
From our hotel, we’ll follow the Julijana trail as it moves along a peaceful, lightly forested gravel road that leads into the Dobrava meadows, one of the most scenic stretches in the Bohinj basin. This open landscape offers panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains, including Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak, and the wild escarpments of the Lower Bohinj Mountains.
We then pass through small villages that preserve the authentic rural lifestyle of the valley, with wooden hayracks (kozolci), fruit orchards, and small chapels. We then gently climb into a quieter stretch of forest before walking down toward Bohinjska Bistrica. Along the way, you’ll see signs of alpine flora and fauna, and hear the sound of the Bistrica River as it flows nearby.
We will finish the walk with a visit to the Historia Bohinj Museum to learn of the events that shaped the Bohinj region during the turbulent 1920s. The museum offers insights into the social and political changes that affected the area, providing a deeper understanding of Bohinj's heritage.
Duration: 4 hrs
Distance: 9 km (5.6 miles) -
For this walk, we will start at the Bohinjska Bistrica train station and travel 45 minutes by train to the other side of the Bohinj South mountains. At the confluence of the Soča and Idrijca rivers, we’ll set off on a scenic path that leads you through lush forests and open meadows.
The trail is well marked, guiding you through rolling hills dotted with pastures. After a gentle ascent, we arrive in the village of Modrej, perched atop a small hill and offering sweeping views of the surrounding countryside with its rolling fields of wildflowers with the majestic backdrop of the Julian Alps towering in the distance.
We’ll proceed to the vibrant town of Tolmin, gateway to breathtaking landscapes and a rich cultural heritage. Explore the quaint streets lined with charming cafes and eateries.
We will finish the day with a walk to The Tolmin Gorge with its charming wooden bridges, cleverly placed at points where spectacular views of the emerald waters and steep cliffs can be admired. As you stroll deeper into the gorge, keep an eye out for unique rock features, some carved into whimsical shapes that seem to tell stories of ages past.
Walk duration: 4 hrs
Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles) -
For this walk we’ll begin on the Lake Bled promenade, offering stunning views of the turquoise water, the Bled Island with its iconic church, and the imposing Bled Castle perched high above the lake.
The walk is relatively easy, passing through shaded areas with trees. After completing the circular walk around the lake, the next part of the hike is a moderate ascent to the Osojnica viewpoint, which offers one of the best panoramic views of the lake.
The trail ascends through the forest, with intermittent views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. As you climb, the path becomes narrower and a bit more challenging, but the effort is worth it. There is an option to spend time at a café on the lake, rather than walk this portion of the trail.
The view from Osojnica is considered one of the most photographed in Slovenia. The green forests, the shimmering lake, and the distant mountains create a breathtaking scene.
Duration: 3 hrs
Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles) -
The hike begins in Begunje na Gorenjskem, a charming village located at the foot of the Blegoš Hill and surrounded by lush greenery. Begunje is known for its rich cultural heritage and its connection to the famous Avsenik Brothers musical group.
The village itself offers some fascinating local history which we’ll take some time to explore. The route begins on a well-marked path that gradually leads us out of the village and into the surrounding forested hills, leading to the small church of Sv. Peter. This offers sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, including the valley below and the peaks of the Karavanke Mountains to the north.
From Sv. Peter, the path continues to Sankaška Koča, a mountain hut that is a popular resting point for hikers and skiers alike. The hut is known for its warm, welcoming atmosphere, offering refreshments and the chance to enjoy local dishes.
Once back in the village, we will visit Avsenik Museum and find out about the beginnings of Slovenian popular folk music and listen to more recent music by the popular Avsenik Ensemble.
Duration: 3.5 hrs
Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles) -
We start the day with a short bus ride to the entrance of Vintgar Gorge, a stunning natural wonder located just a short distance from Lake Bled. The Vintgar Gorge trail is an easy walk along wooden bridges and paths that wind through the gorge, offering spectacular views of the emerald-green Radovna River, waterfalls, and towering cliffs.
From the end of Vintgar Gorge, we will continue our walk towards Hom, a viewpoint located on the outskirts of the Karavanke Mountains. The trail offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including Lake Bled, the Julian Alps, and the rolling hills of the Gorenjska region.
When we return to Lake Bled, we head to Bled Castle, perched high above the lake. This medieval castle offers impressive views of the lake, the island, and the surrounding mountains. Explore the castle grounds, visit the small museum inside, and enjoy the history and culture of this well-known Slovenian landmark.
We will finish the day with a boat ride to Bled Island. The Pletna boats, traditional wooden boats rowed by locals, will take us across the lake to the island. Once on the island, we can explore the Church of the Assumption, climb the bell tower, and ring the famous bell for luck. We’ll take some time to stroll around the island and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Meet your guides
We have partnered with a local guide who lives not far from our hotel in Slovenia. Liza Hlede is her name and she knows the area exceedingly well. Indeed, she also knows the high peaks in the area well, but we won’t be hiking up any mountains.
Not only will Liza guide us along our trails, she will share information about the culture and history of the area. She is a registered guide in Slovenia and has been leading groups there and internationally for many years.
Joining Liza is Bob Lawson, co-founder of Travel Fever Tours. He has recently taken groups to France, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Italy, Mexico, and Costa Rica.

Is this trip for you?
This is a walking trip and we will walk. The longest day is approximately 10 miles, but most days are in the 6-8 mile range.
This is not a hiking trip. We have selected paths that are relatively level and free from rocks and roots. There will be a few rough spots, but they are few and we can work with you to provide alternative routes or plans, if needed.
We will stay at a single, central hotel, so there is no need to carry anything on our walks other than a day pack, some extra clothes, and water.
Because of the location of our routes, it won’t be possible to shorten most of our walks. You should be prepared to walk the entire length of each route (or take the entire day off).
Vegetarians and Vegans can be accommodated on this trip.
