Enjoy the beauty and culture of Scotland - September 2026
Walking on Scotland’s Fife Coastal Trail
September 1 to 9, 2026
Join us in September 2026 for a walk on the Fife Coastal Path along the diverse coastline of eastern Scotland. The walk passes through historic towns, golden beaches, and picturesque fishing villages.
We will stay two nights in Edinburgh to start this trip to take a guided tour and enjoy this historic city. Next, we will move on to the centrally located town of Kirkcaldy, mid-way along the Fife coast. Here we’ll stay in a central hotel for the rest of the tour, taking the train and other transport to reach our moderate day trails. The Fife Coastal Path does indeed run along the coast and is level and well maintained.
A significant draw of the Fife Coastal Path is its rich historic and cultural heritage. Walkers will encounter a wealth of landmarks, including medieval ruins like Aberdour Castle and Macduff's Castle. The trail also passes through charming coastal communities, such as Crail, often cited as one of the most photographed harbors in the UK, and Dysart, with its iconic Harbourmaster's House. These villages offer a glimpse into Scotland's maritime past.
The Fife Coastal Path is also a haven for nature lovers. The route meanders through diverse landscapes, from expansive sandy beaches to dramatic clifftop paths offering panoramic views of the North Sea. Along the way, hikers can spot an abundance of wildlife, including grey seals, gannets, eider ducks, and puffins, with the lucky few even catching sight of dolphins offshore.
The distances on this walk are moderate, covering between 6 and 10 miles a day. And we’ll do more than just walk. Anyone fancy a visit a Scotch distillery?
About the this walk
This walk through Scotland is designed to be moderate, both in distances and terrain. We’ll cover 6 to 10 miles a day along fairly level paths. Indeed, some stretches will be on the beach.
The Fife Coastal Path will give you a unique combination of nature, historic sites, and a great introduction to Scottish history and culture. And as is often said, if you keep the sea on your right, you won’t get lost.
We will pass through a number of natural areas, from beaches to nature reserves. There are castles and abandoned manor houses. Add to this the small fishing villages and other towns that we’ll walk through along the route.
As we’ll be staying in one, central location along the trail, there will be no need to pack and move your luggage each day. Just take your day pack and you are off. And the first few days of walking will be accessible by train, as is our travel from Edinburgh.

A visit to Edinburgh, Scotland
We will begin our tour with two nights in Edinburgh. Not only will this give you a chance to catch up on your sleep before we start our walk, it will give us a full, uninterrupted day to explore this fascinating city with the help of a local guide.
Edinburgh, the historic capital of Scotland, is a city rich in history, culture, and stunning architecture. Dominating its skyline is the Edinburgh Castle, perched atop an extinct volcano, offering panoramic views of the city below. The Royal Mile, a cobbled street brimming with historic buildings and hidden closes, stretches from the Castle down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland.
This captivating blend of medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its winding streets and ancient tenements, and the elegant Georgian New Town, with its neoclassical buildings and grand squares, creates a distinctive and unforgettable urban landscape.
Following our stay in Edinburgh, we’ll take the train a bit north to begin our walk.

Where we’ll stay
At the start of this trip, we’ll stay two nights in a centrally located hotel in Edinburgh that gives us access to the city’s castle and other landmarks.
We will then move to Kirkcaldy, the largest of the towns along the Fife Coastal Path. There we’ll stay for the remainder of our time together in Scotland at the Strathearn Hotel. The hotel offers a number of amenities, including a restaurant and a gin & whisky bar.
The hotel was first built in the 1880s as a mansion for a wealthy industrialist. It was converted to a hotel some 90 years ago and has undergone major renovations since, providing guests with both history and comfort. It is located just beside the Ravenscraig Castle and its sea-side park.
