Visiting the Alsace, a less-known corner of France

This trip to France, run in cooperation with the OSHER chapter at Boise State University, is now open to general enrollment. Anyone and everyone can now join us.

We’ll be based in the picturesque town of Riquewihr as we explore the food and culture of the Alsace. Riquewihr is a charming village just over the French border from Germany.

Many folks have compared French and German cultures. In the Alsace, you can find out what happens when you actually combine them. This region has passed between France and Germany a number of times, marrying influences from both countries and cultures. Since the end of World War II, it has been part of France, but this doesn’t stop it from having a unique culture, speaking its own dialect, and having its own unique foods. The landscape and architecture are also striking in this less-known corner of France, with colorful timber frame houses lining the narrow village streets.

The trip will run October 15 to 22, 2026.
