Greece is as lovely as I remembered

It was all so perfect. The whitewashed walls, the blue door and shutters, the deep-blue sky and the flaming bougainvillea in red. This village on the island of Tinos was a true feast for the eyes. This was exactly what I hoped to see in Greece.

Then I stepped around the corner in the small, stone-lined alleyway and there was another picture-perfect scene. Different with different flowers, yet the same. Certainly, the same beauty. And then there was the next house and the next and the next.  I just kept walking with my camera clicking away every 10 feet.

I’ve just been on the islands of Tinos and Naxos scouting future trips. I met with an incoming tour company in Athens and things really clicked. They have the same Travel Fever approach to travel. Next I needed to lay eyes on the islands themselves before committing to take a group there.

I was originally interested in a walking tour, but after my visit, I’m also thinking about a food & culture trip. The food is fabulous and so linked to the land. And obviously the culture runs deep. And then I started thinking about an artist workshop. And the suggestion of a photography workshop came up.

As far as I can see, there is no need to choose. Let’s do them all.

Tinos is a medium-sized island known for, among other things, its tidy villages. It’s reputation is well deserved. I tooled around on a motorbike taking in as much of the island as I could in the limited time available.

Naxos is larger and more on the tourist circuit. But all I needed to do as head out of the main town and soon I was winding from white village to village. There is more agriculture on Naxos, which I enjoy seeing.  From olive groves to orange and lemon trees, plus an occasional potato field and vineyards.

I should also mention the large number of chapels all over the islands, most painted white with a small blue dome and a bell ready to ring. The hills, especially now in the fall, are brown. The bright white chapels more than catch the eye.

And don’t get me started about the food. I ate far too much because with limited time there were so many things to try.
