Portugal painted buildings

Join Mary Giammarino in Porto, Portugal - May 4 - 11, 2023

There is no city more welcoming than Porto and no better place to paint. And for that matter, there is no better art instructor than Mary Giammarino to help you capture the essence of Portugal. This will be the fourth workshop Mary had led for us and in addition to being a great artist, she has a knack of making it all fun.

The historic structures in Porto stand shoulder to shoulder, with its colorful facades and roofs flowing down to the edge of the Douro River.

In the evening the city comes alive, with lights shimmering across the water and cafes and restaurants that line the banks of the river.

In addition to ample time to paint, we’ll visit the beach, take a train trip to Braga, another historic Portuguese town, and get to know Porto inside and out.

What you will do:

Each morning we’ll rise to a delicious Portuguese breakfast at our hotel. Once we’re ready to face the day, we’ll pack up our painting supplies and head out to different areas of this small, charming city along the banks of the River Douro.

There will be historic buildings to paint, as well as lovely churches and other structures. Or you can paint the striking view across the river.

We’ll paint until lunch. The afternoon will be your time to relax or to explore the city on your own. For dinner we’ll sample the fine Portuguese cuisine

Since we are so close to the Atlantic beach, we’ll visit the ocean one afternoon. And one of the days we’ll take a train to the historic town of Braga where we’ll shop at the open-air market and soak in the sights and sounds of a different part of Portugal.

We will also book a boat trip up the Douro River to see where the grapes are grown on the banks of the river that are made into Port and sold all around the world.

Non-painters:
Non-artist partners and others are very welcome on this tour and will enjoy the alternative activities we have planned for you for when the artists are painting.

Art instructor Mary Giammarino

Your instructor:

Mary Giammarino

Mary has led many workshops for Travel Fever Tours, in Oaxaca/Mexico, Provence, and Andalucia/Spain. She works in oils, acrylics and water colors.

Mary’s devotion to light and color is evident in all of her paintings. While her work is influenced by the impressionist palette of the Cape School of Art, her work is less idealized and more contemporary by design.Mary’s plein-air paintings reflect her passion and devotion to capturing the exquisite drama of nature’s fleeting moods.

Mary has had numerous solo shows and exhibitions in Provincetown, Philadelphia and Vermont. Her work is in private collections and museums all over Europe. Mary makes her home in Vermont where she lives with her husband, the sculptor John Cassin, their two dogs, Paris and Janet, and their cat, Seamus.

Mary studied fine art at Greenfield Community College in Massachusetts and continued her art studies with a scholarship at the University of Massachusetts. Being drawn to plein-air painting, Mary sought out the Cape School of Art in Provincetown on Cape Cod. She studied with Hilda Neily, John Ebersberger and Cedric and Joanette Egeli. Today, Mary carries on the tradition by teaching plein-air painting classes on the Cape, in Vermont and on trips to Italy, Mexico, France and Spain.
