Join us for a pastel workshop in March 2020 as we work with award-wining instructor Karen Baker, CPS, PSA, PSTB. This week-long, plein air workshop in Dunedin, on the Gulf coast just north of Tampa, is our first in Florida. We have carefully selected both the location and the instructor to ensure that you both create great art and enjoy the sunny seashore while much of the rest of the US suffers through winter.

Join artist-instructor Karen Baker as she paints what inspires her the most — the world of nature and its ever-changing landscape.

We will be flying into Tampa airport, an easy and inexpensive flight from most places in the US, and staying at a lovely hotel close to Karen's studio. We will be painting beaches, towns, a big river, and will explore this northern coast of Florida. Maybe go see manatees!

Karen is an award-winning landscape and floral artist who has been teaching for over 30 years.  She offers classes and workshops in the art of pastel painting and the creative process, landscape painting, mixed-media, and plein air painting. Her love for teaching includes helping students discover and express their creative “voice” through applied technique and self-exploration.

She studied drawing and mixed media with abstract artist Barbara Garber at Brattleboro Community College in Vermont, where she became passionate about the pastel medium and landscape painting.  In the years that followed, she was mentored by Master Pastelist Herman Margulies, and has studied with noted pastelists Stanley Maltzman, Christina DeBarry, Elizabeth Apgar-Smith, Wolf Kahn, Albert Handell, and Larry Moore.

Karen’s portfolio covers a range of subjects: rural New England farm buildings, meadows and mountain vistas; lowland waterways of the coastal South; Florida shorelines, open waterways, the remote Everglades and sugar cane fields. She is also known for her colorful floral paintings, particularly the prolific Poppy Series featuring blooms in open fields, garden settings, or detailed close-up studies. Other recently developed themes include paintings of deep water and open skies.

The most exciting aspect of the painting experience is the creative process itself: That spontaneous flow of energy working through the artist, condensed into form.
