Join us for a painting trip to Southern Spain
Join well-known water color instructor Tony van Hasselt, AWS, to explore and paint sunny Andalucia in the heart of southern Spain. Working in water colors or pastels, you’ll have the chance to paint amazing vistas, white villages and beautiful landscapes dominated by olive groves. Enjoy authentic Spanish food and culture as you relax in a small, family-run hotel in the quiet hills.
Tony maintains a busy workshop schedule throughout the year in such locations as Provence, Tuscany, Mexico, and of course in his home state of Maine.
The town of Zahara de la Sierra, the home base of this tour, is a classic, white Spanish village. It enjoys fabulous views across a valley and lake and is capped by a Moorish castle. This “Pueblo Blanco” owes its history to a strategic position between Seville and Ronda. This central location, and its breath-taking setting, makes Zahara an unmatched home base for this tour.
Zahara sits on a north-facing hill, providing lovely views over the lake to high hills beyond. The scenery offers many options for painting, as does the town itself, with its picturesque church in the village center and the castle tower above.
The town lies less than 1.5 hours from the modern airport in Seville, where you will arrive. The town is half an hour from Ronda, which we’ll visit. This town that sits on an extraordinary cliff and was first made known to many Americans by Ernest Hemmingway.
To reach Seville, the meeting point of this workshop, you can fly directly into the airport, or take a high-speed train from Madrid.
Optional 4 days in Seville:
Take four days to explore Seville, the historic capital of Andalucia as an optional add-on to this workshop. Visit the city’s original Moorish palace, climb the cathedral’s tower, wander the former Jewish quarter, or just relax in one of the city’s famous tapas bars.
This optional add-on will give you a chance to overcome your jetlag before the formal workshop begins -- while brushing up on your Spanish. We will book your three-night hotel stay and help orient you. Then you are free to explore, paint or journal in this amazing city at your own speed.
Pre-workshop add-on in Seville: April 30 to May 2, 2019
Workshop in Zahara de la Sierra: May 3 to 10, 2019
Be inspired in Andalucia with master watercolor instructor Tony van Hasselt
Tony van Hasselt, A.W.S.
This native Dutchman has been elected to signature membership of the American Watercolor Society and for decades, organized and taught watercolor workshops throughout the US, Mexico and abroad. He has traveled and painted widely in Italy, France and throughout the continent.
Tony is a plein air painter who enjoys sharing his experience with students. His aim is to teach in a sequential manner, building on what has already been presented. Although drawing ability comes first, the focus is on the art of picture making, composition and design. These are skills applicable in any medium. He also encourages sketchbook journaling to create memories of an area, often using such sketches as preparation for larger efforts.
Tony has written and co-authored three books on watercolor and produced several how-to DVD presentations.

About the workshop
Demonstrations will be in watercolor but students using acrylics are welcome. Studio painters might consider this workshop as an introduction to working on location, while finishing touches can be added later in the comfort of your studio.
Weather permitting, the daily schedule starts with a plein air lecture-demonstration. After some on-location advice, students are free to select a subject and paint on their own, while Tony assists on an individual basis. Tony considers himself more of a coach than an instructor. After all, there are many ways to approach a subject and the enjoyment is in exploring your own style and direction.
